“Where do you think you’re going?” Sky’s voice boomed as he paced back and forth banging the door in the process. “I’m not even close to done with you!”
I had heard enough of his one sided monologue reprimanding me about my failure to hit the month’s target for the second consecutive quarter. I mean it’s not like I controlled the economy, but that didn’t matter to him. All he cared about was the numbers coming in and the company meeting the bottom line. This was in spite of the fact that the country was facing a global pandemic for the fourth consecutive year.

When I joined his organization, it had been a dream come true. I was finally working for a multinational corporation; doing what I loved and controlling my working hours. The state of the art office, yearly bonuses and fully paid exotic vacations giving me the drive to give my all. I knew coming in that he was a hard man to deal with but I believed I was more than armed to work with him given my prior experience dealing with difficult bosses. This was not going to be my first rodeo.

So as I sat in his office today being reprimanded for not delivering on the business, it came as a surprise to me when I snapped and on impulse decided I'd had enough. Mechanically picking up my folder and getting up from my seat to walk out leaving him mid-speech. He reacted faster than me shutting the door while on fumes. A move that both instilled fear in me and made me more irate. How dare he? Yes he was the boss of me but that gave him no right to imprison me in his office.

I sat myself down on the sofa as he strode back to his chair. To think I’d thought things couldn’t get any worse…

He took a sip of his now cold tea, adjusted his tie and rubbed his temple with his eyes tightly shut before reiterating, “Now where were we?”

I resigned myself to bearing another onslay of words from him. As I sat there listening, I couldn't help thinking about the latest financial faze Aidan had been ranting about over the weekend. I chuckled to myself thinking about how animated he had been describing it. I had been and was still skeptical about it but it didn't seem like too bad an idea at the moment. There was a high possibility of me receiving the pink slip or tendering my resignation given how hostile the work environment had become. I drifted back to the room right about when Sky was asking if I was committing to doubling my business leads for that month. I acquiesced just so the one on one would end.

“You may leave now, and Blaise, don’t think for a moment I’ve forgotten that little move you pulled. Let this be the last time you challenge my authority.”
